Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the preschool program at Friends School offers an exemplary early childhood curriculum taught by highly trained professionals. In keeping with the high standards of NAEYC, all of our teachers have degrees in education. All are experienced and trained in working with children of all abilities. In addition, every class also has an assistant teacher that either has a Child Development Associates Credential (or higher) or is currently in school working toward that goal. All faculty and staff participate in annual professional development.
During the preschool day, children experience a play-based curriculum, small and large group instruction, gross motor play, art, sensory activities, snack, toileting, free center play, and skill based activities. In addition, depending on the age of the children, music and Spanish classes are also provided. Friends School believes that curriculum is everything that happens from the moment the students walk in the door until the moment they leave. Every minute is an opportunity – a teachable moment – to work on adaptive skills, social skills, and independence. Teachers create thematic based lesson plans that are available for parent review and children are assessed during each unit of study. A comprehensive developmental portfolio is compiled for each student, chronicling their growth in all developmental domains throughout their time at Friends.
